Use of Firearms by Border
Prohibition Men.
MALONE. N. Y., July 1.— Res!-
dents along the Canadian border have
become aroused by the wounding of
Miss Belle Baker last Tuesday night
and the subsequent arrest of three
federal officials charged with assault.
It is alleged that the, officers. who
were watching for rum runners. fired
at the automobile containing Miss
Baker and her father when the lat-
ter refused to stop at the command
of the government agents.
The Malone Chamber of Commerce
board of directors has adopted a re-
solution requesting Senator Wads—
worth and Congressman Snell toruse
their influence for a. thorough investi-
gation of the indiscriminate use of
tire arms in stopping suspected cars
along the border
The resolution also suggested that
all government agents be uniformed.
so that they may not be mistaken for
holdup men.
Mr. Baker said he thought the of-
ficers were robbers and that when
they ordered him to stop. he stopped
on (he accelerator and wad lired upon
by them, one bullet striking his daugh
let in the side but not wounding her
seriously. Soon after he had reached
Malone and reported the "hold up" to

ed. Mr. Baker declared he recognized

the top of a high mountain in Central
Mexico next September.

preparation will have gone for naught.
