NEW YORK. July 4.—Out ot the
maze of conflictil'; opinion in the
bond market. there came yesterday' a
faint breath of optimism. Hope was
amused (or more easy money. with
renewed demand for investment bonds
and the impending competition be-
tween tho British and American gov-
ernments, it was expected. might have
a stimulating effect on the whole list.
British-American competition '.as
frequently pointed out here. should
boost Liberty bonds to par by late
summer. Once this point is reached
liquidation should follow, with an out-
pouring of investment money into
high grade domestic issues. Easy
money. which can come only with a
let-up in business and perhaps at the
expense or the stock market. will
prove a. bulge stimulant to investment
buying. In fact, that is the main
trouble with the bond market at. this
time, with Wall street failures and-
the general feeling of uncertainty
tuning a close second.
Bonds Unusually Low.
But there are indications that the
financial district is coming out of its
period oi depression and that the scare
of the last few days is slowly drifting
away. Renewed confidence can have
only one reult. an upward bond mar-
ket trend. and this confidence may
come overnight. The sltuaiibn is dif-
ticuit. to Analyze. true. but bonds are
unusually low and should go higher.
It will not take much to start them
moving.
Experts do not expect much bond
improvement in the next twenty days.
but after that hope begins. General
opinion is that. bonds will not go much
lower in the next fortnight: rather
they are expected to remain around
present levels. New financing. it has
been ascertained. will be held of!
pretty much until then. Now and then
feelers will be put out. like the 340.-
000.000 Youngstown Steel and Tube
issue next Monday. but most invest~
snout. bankers are content to rest on
their oars and let. the other fellow
try his luck.
The bond market yesterday was
something of an improvement over
the hectic trading of recent sessions.
Liquidation to protect stocks it was
apparent, had some to a pause, and
renewed demand for 'higher class
loans was evident.
United States government issues
rallied sooner than had been expected.
following some selling for cash in the
morning. and higher inch in gov.
crnment loans may be expected from
Mondav on, when the Treasury sink—
ing (und will start operating.
In the Foreign Section.
In the foreign section a continua-
tion or the downward trend was true.
New Austrian 7s again improved. how
ever, following up a fractional loss
early in the day. French Republics
slumped homil) the 8s droppir'j: 1%
and closing 1 point. 01!. while the 7 1,6
receded l 1/. French cities were little
better off, while Paris-Lyons-Medit-
errunean 6s fell 1%.. Belgians lost
improved. Serbian as were in greater
demand. with only a slight recession.

US. steel 5s and Southern Railway
issues all gained ground. Trading in
Southern Railway bonds was partic-
ularly heavy.
Second grade rails were inclined to
cotton. but spooniative railroad is-
sues were in much better tone. loses
about nvemging gains. with price
movements comparatively nominal.
