HARTFORD, July 3.—-Publlc utili-
ties companies in Connecticut had
grOSs earnings of $121.449.216.99 in
'thc past calendar year, an increase or
$5,861,891.46 over their aggregate
gross earnings in the previous year. it
was shown by a. certification of public.
utilities taxes to the state treasury
made yesterday by the state board of
equalization.
Increase‘d earnings at steam rail-
roads were responsible for over half
the not gain for the year. . The five
such railroads in the state had a. com-
bined gross income of “4,573,455.59
in the year 1922 upon which they will
be required to pay taxes of $1.827.-
074.91. Their combined gross income
for the previo year was $52,198,-
929.72 and the taxes paid. $1.744,-
506.51. A considerable greater use of
the telephone in the state boosted the
511.911.759.10 in 1921 to $12,611.~
830.46 in 1922. while there was a. drop
of about $10,000 in the gross enrnlncs

ported gress earnings of $126,697 in
the previous year.
The Hartford Electric Light Co. re-
ported taxable gross earnings of 84,-
610.345.01, as against $3,958,169.53 in

were $4,174,341.49. whereas the same
company reported $3.788.162.93 in the
previous year. These two companies
did far the largest amount of businesse
in the state in their class, the nearest
approach to them being made by the
Eastern Connecticut Power Co., which
reported earnings of $652,052. as
against earnings of $502,917 reported
in 1921.
Gross earnings of $1,542,397 were
rcportcd by the Hartford City Gas
light Co. The same company reported
earnings of $1.556:503.46 {or 1931. The
only other gas company in the slate
whose busincss cxccmled it was the
New Haven Gas Light Co.. which
against 52.022.005.98 in 1921 to 31.-
097.527.61 in 1922: the Bridgcport Gas
Company dropped from $1.519.25:: 03
in1921 to 81.447.032.36 in 1922. the
New Britain company dropped from
