SAN FRANCISCO. June 30.--Onc
of the long distance ocean yacht races
that stands second to none in the
rsnks of blue ribbon aquatic races
is the. Santa Barbara—Honolulu com-
petition over a course of approxi-
mstely 3.000 miles. a matter of fifteen
days of sailing to cover.
This year’s race will be started
from Santa Barbara on July 21 at the
noon hour. and thus for nine yachts
have been entered. It is possible that
one or two more will be entered be-
fore the start.
Incidentally. the race will be started
by Sir Thomas Lipton. irrespective
of whether he is in Santa Barbara
or in the Balkans. Arrangements
will be perfected to have him con-
nected with the starting gun through
the agencies of modern science no
that his hand will be the one actually
to send the craft over the starting
line.
Among the entrants are Cecil B. De
Mills, the motion picture producer.
whose colors will be carried by the
Seswsrd. The Caprice. flagship of
the Santa Barbara. Ystch Club. will be
soother contestant. . A. R. Poddcr.
commodore of that club. has entered
his newly christened Diablo. This
boat. formerly was the Iiaswell.
Other boats are the Iraiia, owned
by Eugene Overton .admlral of the
Southern California. Yachting Asso-
ciation: Viking IV, owned by Admiral
O. Bolland of the Pacific Coast Yacht-
ing Association: the Cocos. belonging
jointly to I“. H. L. \Vllson and John
Bowers.
It is s matter of regret among
yschtsmcn that there in“ be no lio-
nolulu boat entered in the 1923 com-
petition. which gives promise of being
the most interesting race sailed since
the institution of the affair in 1906
by Clarence Mcl-‘srlanc. A thorough
scouring of the islands has revealed
the fact that there is not a single
svsilabls craft that would stand any
chsnco sgainst the company sche-
duled to make the 3.000 mile run.
Always Hawaii has figured promi-
nently in races of the past. In the
1011 rsce Prince Kalaniansola was a
member of the crew of the Hawaii
which distsnced all competitors. To
be out of the event. this year has been
good blow to sit Hawaiians whether
smut-men or landlubbers and the
probsbllltles are that all hands will
be spurred to see to it that something
is Gm so tint this state of affairs
will not come shout when the nest
recs comes off. It bu.been sug-
