Race from New London to
Bermuda in Fastest
Time Ever Made.
HAMILTOX. June 20. —— All the
yachts which competed in the ocean
race from New London. Conn., to Ber-
muda with the exception of the Isa-
bel Q., are resting at anchor tonight
in Hamilton harbor. The Isabel had
not yet finished.
The first boat to cross the finish
line on Sunday morning was the class
B Yacht Memory. owned by R. N.
Bavier. she passed and burned her
flare at 8:00 a. m.. and about two
hours later the schooner Seafarer.
owned by S. B. Coffin. crossed. An
hour later John Aiden‘s Malabar IV
finished. This is considered remark-
able. as the Malabar IV. is in the
smaller class.
Sunday afternoon seven other
yachts came in within one and a half
hour of each other. Three of these,
the ‘Bagherra owned by Carroll
Brown; Black Hawk owned by w. \V.
Hand. Jr.. and Sunbeam. belonging to
S. V. Baker. finished within‘ forty sec-
onds of each othr. It is said there
neverhasfieen‘snch‘r‘c‘l‘ose‘finlsh in
an ocean race.
The skippers report having experi-
enced all kinds of weather during tho
race. Several of the boats were badly
beaten about in the‘ gulf stream on
the first night out. The Memory laid
to all night and"most,of the other
boats were under shortened sail dur-
ing the first part of the race. The
Malabar. carrying two reefs. bucked
the sea. making :04 miles in 24 hours.
This is declared by yachtamen to be
the fastest time a 36-foot boat has
ever made at sea. There were no
mishaps.
A remarkable feature of the race is
that the smaller boats finished so
close up with the larger ones. in the
larger division Memory won. with
Flying Cloud second. Seafarer third.
and Sunbeam fourth.
In the smaller division Malabar IV
won first place over Darrell.
Dainty was in. Bermuda entry. Mala.
bar won by 47. minutes corrected.
Dainty getting second prize. The
Malabar also won the cup for the best
corrected time for all classes.
In the special schooner class Ludo-
na wrn over Isobel 0.. while in the
special sloop and yawi class the yawl
Memory best Flying Cloud. The win-
ner of this prize for the entry with the
chute amateur crew has not been de-
cided. The elapsed time of the win-
ner of the race was 112 hours. 18
minutes. ‘
