a Sentinel Reporter On Spot
As “Real Stuif” Is Land-
ed At Shippan‘
Heading swiftly out to sea. under
the dense pail of smoke that overcnst
the sky last night. two small sloops
were observed making a. getaway from
Shippan Point. As the chug of the
motor driven boat died into the stac-
cato pounding of the white-capped
waves on the shore a large motor
truck started its motor engine and'
careened wildly dot-5n the road in the
direction of this city.
As the truck reached apolnt sever-
al hundred yards down the road. it
was hailed by a‘ large touring car
which suddenly flashed on its lights.
After several minutes of subdued
talking the occupants of the touring
car were observed to lift evcral bulky
cases from the truck (1 transfer
them to another car.
The truck. when relieved of part of
its dump burden again headed toward
Stamford and soon passed out of the
sight of the Sentinel reporter who was
in hiding at the spot acting on the tip
that a. load of rum was to be landed
at the point tonight.
After the truck had passed from
view the men in the touring car
paused long enough to open a. case
and were seen to tilt a bottle in the
general direction of the sky and after-
ward smack their lips in great gusto.
The writer had by this time crept
up to within a few feet of the men
and was able to hear their conversa-
tion. which went as follows:

comer to the art of bootlegging and
very nervous said, "Hndn't we better

answer delivered in a. heavy chuckling
tone was. "l—l—-. you don't have to

skids greased for the landing of the
stuff."
After a. few more rounds from the
bottle theqnen evidently were agreed
that thcy had enough and made ready
to leave the scene. The parting con-
versation hoard hy>the writer was
“\V’cll the stuff will be in Bridgeport
soon and we'll be several
dollars richer in the morning".
The nervous one of the pair made
the last remark that “us audible to
the writer which was as follows.
"Drop me off at the corner. Chief, I'll
see you in the morning at the usual
place and we'll go to Bridgeport for
our dough". And so ended another
raid at Shippan.
