Seattle to Chicago

Transportation history was
made the other day when the '
Back Bay freight steamer. with a"
cargo from Seattle. docked at the
municipal pier in Chicago.
It came, of course. by way of
the Panama Canal, Atlantic Ocoan,
St. Lawrence River and Great
Lakes. And it laid down that
Pacific Coast freight cheaper
than could have been done over
a railroad route about one-fifth
as long. At ('hieago the steamer
loaded grain for Buffalo, and at‘
Buffalo or New York it will load
something else for the return trip
to Seattle.
This voyage is seen as the fore-
runner of a great traffic. connec-
ting the oceanic and inland wa-
ters of the United States, bring-
ing distant parts of the country ,
closer together, eheapening do-
mestic freight rates and provid-
ing a better outlet for foreign
markets. All that should come
when the proposed Great Lakes-
St. Lawrence deep waterway is
