their intelligence grows as they get

progress and fully as fascinating as it
is to watch the development of a

baby elephants. tor they get nervous
while they are alone in a big place
like the Garden. and Want company.

Baby Elephants Easily Scared.
Also it is necessary to chain the
baby elephants around the neck and
keep close watch on them. for they
are easily frightened. like children.
and will bolt at the least alarm. Den- l
man once snapped his whip while!
training them in Bridgeport and t
was necessary to go to six diacrent
parts 01 the barn to dig them out or
their hiding places.
They have to be chained to bigger
elephants which like them while they
are on the march also. They do notl
walk along at the even pace the larger
elephants are trained to keep. and
must be taught that they should keep
going until their trainers tell them to
stop. So each one is chained to a big
elephant which takes the baby under
its wing. so to speak. and teaches it
how to keep up with the procession.

cold. He had blankets {or them-—
baby blankets he calls them—but they
were buried in a car and could not be
found. '
"I simply made up my mind that if
these 'punks' were going to go with
the circus they had to learn to stand
the gait." said Denman. "so we start-
ed out. They walked all the way
down without a blanket. and I was
tired. They came through all right
except one. he got tired up at Fifty-
ninth street and simply stopped..
Denman has a great deal 01 trouble
with the baby elephants because
children insist on feeding them pea-
nuts. The big elephants are neglected
by the peanut tans these days. and
Dcnman worries about it becau'.
peanuts are bad to? baby elephants
and sometimes he has to sit up nights
with them.
"But I-would rather do that." said
the good-natured trainer. “than do-
prive a child of the joy of (ceding
peanuts to them. Who could do
that? I couldn't. I know. and I am
not going to tell them to stop. I would
