ing the nttermost depths of space.

universe. triumphing over immeasur-
able dinanoee. to bring a teeming
world news of other stars than ours.
Daily at the lit. Wilson. Cal.. obser-
vation. according to reports reaching
the Carnegie Institution of Washing-
ton. scientists dive headlong into a
mystic sea of mathematics. ethereal
radiations. light waves. d spectro-
scopes and emerge again th amas-
ing revelations ol'worid's beyond the
world that fall from their lips like
. the pronouncements of destiny.
The newest wrinkle for probing the
boundless depths of space invented by
the scientists of Mt. Wilson is a ma-
chine for measuring the diameters of
stars without the use of a telescope
A complicated device of min-orb.
steel beams and railroad tracks. the
implement is so large and so delicate
that instead of being housed. it is
fixed to the earth. and a house on
wheels moves back and forth over it
to shelter it when not in use.
The device is an enormous ampli-
fication of the instrument by which
Professor A. A. B. Michelson measured
the. diameter of Betelgeuse. until re-
cently the largest star measured. and
by Uhich Dr. G. Francis Pease ob-
tained the measurements of Antares.
which dethroned Betelgeuse. and Aid-
ebaran. which fell slightly short oi
Betel‘ues's colossal girth. __
The devise consists of four mirrors
set along a steel beam 76 feet long.
two of them fixed. the other two mov-
able with the aid of screws of an in-
describable finesse of adjustment on-
abling the mirrors to be set within a
thousanth of an inch of- a desired po-
sition.
Beneath the beam are lenses which
gather the reflected beams of star—
light and shunt them into the deli-
cate mechanisms of the interferometer
which reveal to observing scientists
the contortions of the light rays that
give them the clues to the measure-
ments of the stars.
The new implement was constructed
to enable more refined measurements
than Micheleon'e 9i--foot~beam inter-
ferometer. attached to the loo-foot
telescope at Mt. Wilson. permitted.
As is usually the case in all new in-
ventions. their crudity prevents accur-

star 300,000,000 miles in diameter, but
not luminaries. The advantage of the
new instrument lies in its power to
measure our relatively near star neigh-
bore. that is to say. anwhere around
9 light years. or about 5 1- 2 trillion
miles away. 1

with the new device in Sirius. dog
star. in the constellation of Canis Ma-
Jor. about 5.525,580,400.000 miles a-
way. Though the brightest star in the
heavens, it is known to be much
smaller than any of the giants so far
measured, its brilliancy being due to
its relative closeness to the earth. It
is only 1-26 the distance of Betci-
geuse.

Yet Michelson admits that when he
started out to put a ruler on the suns
of space he did it lust for fun. with-
out any real hope that he would suc-
ceed.
From his earliest student days in
Paris. where he startled his profes-
sors by declaring that he had actually
added light to light and obtanied dark-
ness in accordance with a known phy-
sical principle. that later proved the
foundation of his fame. Michelson
pursued his hobby "Just for fun."
Ask him if he is an astron er. and
he will tell you’ “No." inquire if he
is a mathematical wiser-d. and you
get the same answer ‘
What is he? He is a physicist.
His steady march to fame has been '
along lines of devising methods of
forcing the universe to give up its
secrets but leaving their application to
the technicians of the astronomical
profession.
Michelson will tell you that it was
not he that first chalked Betelgeuse's
diameter on a. yardstick. It was a
brother scientist at Mount VVIlson. Cal.
He came to the observatory. set up
his instruments, explained what 11
was after and how to get it and “cut
away. leaxing the actual measure-
ment to others.
The latest measurements of giant
stars is being done" by other men than
Michelson. yet it is he who built the
foundations upon which they are e'rcct'.

of America. in adopting the resolution
on the Dr. Harry Emerson Foedick
case, sponsored by the fundamentaiv

tions supported by the Liberalist ele-
ment, was hailed today as the great-
est victory of the convention by the
former group. '
The fundamentalists opposed to the
liberal interpretation of the Bible. as
expounded by Dr. Fosdick. succeeded
