Lovejoy, in "The American
Chllt ,” evoked that comment.
That’s why We are reprinting it.
“A comparison of child_ wel~
fare standards with those eXisting
ten or fifteen years ago indicates
the seriousness with which Amer-
ica has begu to appreciate the
importance of preparing each new
generation for life. That we have
not reached the goal, hOWever,
is evident from the tragic results
of poor health, poverty, ignorance
and ineificiencydhat are always
manifesting themselves in various
parts of the country. To reach
this goal, the youth of the present
day needs training along the fol-
lowing lines:
“First, we need to train for
keen and accurate observation.
Whatever one's future plans may
lie—whether in the arts, the so-
called intellectual professions, or
in any branch of manual trades,
the ability to see clearly and de-
scribe accurately is fundamental.
There are already so many people
in this country who can do any-
thing you want done and do it
wrong that one of the chief con-
cerns of our educational program
zhould be to Whittle down that
irmy until it disappears.
“Second, our youth need train-
mg to think by hand as well as
by eye. The agitation for voca-
tional education is spreading
rapidly over the country. Many
people consider it a “new thing.”
It is by no means new. The first
little red school house on the New
England hills was a vocational
school. It directly taught' the
farmer's boys and girls to get
away from the farm and the me-
chanic’s boys and girls to get
away from the occupations of
their parents. Every study in the
curriculum was designed to fit the
students for life as a preacher,
teacher, lawyer, missionary, doc-
tor, or politician.
“It is true we preached the
joys and honor of manual labor.
_We applauded the vigor of the
farmer and the village black-
smith. }Ve did not fool the
children, however. They saw
through our hypocrisy and made
straight for the main chance.
“Today we have broadened our
conception of vocations and are
seriously attempting to lift every
kind of labor that should be per-
formed by human beings out of
the plane of a job and into that
of a vocation. How far we have
to go was illustrated when Amer-
ica entered the war. At the very
time our Allies were calling on

Jordan Cars to be
Reduced in Price

The general downward revision of
motor car prices made possible by do-
creased overheads due to the large
volume arraigned by the leading man-
utacturers during the past several
months was definitely forecast today
when the Jordan Motor Car Company
issued a statement indicating that a
spectacular price revision would be
announced Sunday May 27. The dc-
finite amount of the reduction cannot
be made public until Sunday owing
to agreements previously entered into
by the Jordan Company with the dis-
tributing organizations. But it is said
that the reductions will be suincient
to give Jordan price leadership in its
class. '

in Ruhr District
ESSEN, May 2:.—Serious riotingx
between German miners and police
took place today.
Twenty thousand miners who have
been on strike since held a demon-
citation in the square in Dortmund.
The police. in endeavoring to dis-
perse the gathering. fired into the
crowd. killing three persons and
wounding twenty-four others.
The crowds attacked the police. of
whom seven were wounded.
Similar demonstrations occurred at
the Scharnkorst mine. where two
workmen were killed and others
