Place of the, Foreman
It was said during the world’s
war by some military experts that
that was a “lieutenant’s war.”
They meant that the success (h
failure of an army did not depen
so much upon the generals and
big men in control of vast masses
of troops, as upon the initiative
and judgment of young ofl‘icers in
charge of small groups of men.
These fellows carried a. big re-
sponsibility, and the force that
had the best lieutenants had a tre-
mendous advantage.
So in industrial work, in organ-
izing the production of a factory
'or other business, a great deal de-
pends upon the quality of the peo-
ple who take the. position of fore-
men of gangs of workers. One of
the most serious causes of discon-
tent in many industries arises
from failure of foremen to get
along well with employcs under
them.
The foreman must have force
and energy and leadership enough
to get real work out of his em-
ployes. Such a person may al-
ways be unpopular with shirkers
and loafers. Yet there are many
folks who seem to loose their
heads when they get into this po-
sition with a little power. .
\V’liere a big man at the head'
of a great business would be affa-
ble and conciliatory in dealing
with his subordinates, the grouchy
foreman often assumes a bullying
and abusive attitude. Ile irri—
tates and aggravates those under
him. and creates an attitude of
rebellion that makes the people
under him unhappy. and which
fails to get results for the busi-
ness.
The well equipped foreman
must have an cquable temper and
accurate judgment of human na-
ture. A body of ill tempered fore-
men could come near wrecking a
firm's business. The man who
can maintain high standards of
cflicieney, yet will be sympathetic
and fair in adjusting every real
grievance L“ a treasure that any
business concern should value
highly.

Ten Million Backd’ches
One of the sad mistakes that
these United States of America
have made, is in allowing the idea
to persist that a kitchen sink
should be just so high, regardless
of the length of mother’s mortal
frame.
It may be too much to say that
all the ills of our beloved country
can be traced to the fact" that the
wash~tubs are only twentyseven
inches from the floor, whereas
they ought to be thirty inches be
‘oause mother stands five feet four.
But we do know that lawyers and
liticians are all the time throw-
3 fits over questions that are
absolutely trivial and childish
compared to this.
If mother is so tall, tubs, sink,
table, stove, and ironing-board
ought to be so high from the floor.
If she is taller, they must. be high-
er. Even if, by some miracle, she
were to be four feet ten one day
and five feet eight the next, ev-
ery one of those blessed things
she did.
That is what we think about the
real importance .of.backaches.
