INQUEST ENDED
IN ARENO DEATH
Coroner John J. Phelan completed
taking testimony yesterday afternoon
in the inquest into the death of Philip
Arcno. tho six-year-old son of Antonio
Arena of 21 River street. who died
from injuries received as the result of
being struck by the Danbury—South
Norwalk train at the Mechanic street
railroad trestle.-
\V. 8. Young of Stamford, engineer
of the train that struck the boy. was
'cross-examined by Coroner l’hclan in
the latter's office in the county court-
house building in Bridgeport. Engi-
neer Young testified that he had not
sen the Areno boy on the. track.
"Why didn't you sce the boy?"
asked Coroner Phclan. “After round-
ing the Cross street curve you had a
clear track {or at least four hundred
ieet.’
"At the north end or the “211] street
tunnel,
feet fro mthe place where the acridl-n‘.
happened. there is a signal,‘ said l-Zn-
gineer Young. “This signal warns as
to whether the track is clear into the
South Norwalk railroad depot or not.
At the time of the accident my eyes
were fastened intently on the signal so
that I did not see the boy. I also
believe that the gloomy conditions
caused by the tunnel also contributed
toward my not seeing the boy.’
Engineer Young further testified
that he had blown the whistle of the
train and rang the bell from VVlnni-
pauk to the Cross street crossing. He
said that the bell worked by automatic
methods and once turned on. did not
stop ringing until turned off.
Coroner Phelan reserved decision in
the case.

iliary were pleasantly surprised at the
regular meeting of the ’organlzatlon
held last night. Unannounced mem-
bers ot the Lieutenant M. W. Bishop
camp and the Charles H. Bonesteel
auxiliary of Bridgeport, and the Fred-
erickA. Hill auxiliary of Stamford.
dropped in at the meeting.
Following the business. a most en-
joyable social time was in order.
Piano selections were rendered by
Mrs.A A‘lfred Kraemer. Miss MildIed
Smith and Miss Gladys Smith. Norma
Kramer pleased with several vocal
selections. Dancing was enjoyed. Ite-
freshments consisting of Irankfurts,
coffee and cake were served.
The Memorial Day committee was
appointed. The committee follows:

hieri Mrs. Herbert Coleman. Mrs.
Dorothy hue, and Mrs. Howard God-
frey.
