Stromboli. the world's most active
volcano whose ill natured roaring
constantly shakes the little island
north of Sicily, and which always
bears a plume o! smoke by day and
o! the by night. some months ago
erupted tor the first time in almost
three years.
Reports reaching the Government

sense that it never has a quiet mood.
like Vesuvius, this activity is not
vicious." he said. "There is a. con-
stant blaze and roaring and fre-
quently throwing up of small stones.
But Stromboli has never caused the
sort 0 {disasters that Etna or Vesu-
Vius have to their discredit. Even
the 1919 eruption. which could be
heard in Naples. several hundred kilo-
meters away killed only three peo-
ple. We do not think that Stromboli
is apt to break out in a. really dis-
astrous eruption."
A Primitive People.
Nearly 3,000 people live on the
steep flanks of the volcano. They
are mostly fishermen and live an al-
most primitive life. The little island
i sent of! from the Italian peninsula
and Sicily. except for introquont mall
boats. Many legends about old
Stromboli are told by the fishc'rmen.
