people went at their self— imposed
task of voting for liylan, for ex-
ample. And the sellers of goods
in .New Y ork recognize the possi-
bilities of big profits when any
thing is to be done by all the peo-
ple, and—3v,1'll the3 don" t mark
down their goods. The inost re-
cent example of this lies in the re-
ported rise in the price of car-
nations with the approach of
Mother 5 D113. And this time the
public seems to ha3e fooled the
dealers, to a considerable extent.
For it is said that Saturday evo-
ning found \ery large stocks of
unsold carnations in the florists
hands, together with perfectly
good price tags indicating that
the. 3alue. of earnations had risen
some 200 per cent with Mother 5
Day looming ne11r.'lhe carna-
tion has been supposed. to be the
official “on er with which to cele-
brate Mother’s Day. But some-
how or other a lot of people in
New York -— very sensibly, it
would seem—came to the conclu-
sion that the day might as well be
celebrated 31 ith some other flow r
whose price has not risen quite so
rapidl3 during the last few days.

he has been practising in a town
in that state.
During the year 1909, he said.
he had 96 malaria patients, and
seven had typhoid. In 1922, while
he had more patients than in 1909,
as people will continue to get
sick, yet he had only one doubt-
ful case of malaria, and none of
typhoid.
In 1909 there 33as not a well
screened hodse in the town and
every home had an old fashioned
privy. The town was nearly sur-
rounded by mosquito breeding
areas. Now mosquito breeding
places had been drained, houses
screened, water and sewage sys-
tems installed, other 'improve-
ments made and hookworm dis-
case has fast disappeared. Many
of the former victims of disease
who had to depend on charity are
now riding in touring cars.
There are thousands of other
places where similar, improve-
ments have been made. They
, suggest that a big part of the ills
'from which people sufler are due
to unhealthy conditions that call
be removed by intelligent super-
vision. \
_ A reasonable amount. of money.
used in fighting the causes of
disease, and the means by which
it is transmitted, will save far
more than the expenditure. The
cost of disease to the American
people is something tremendous.
