Mother
Mother. What, a world of son-
timent is characterized in that one
little word, mother.
The one who watched over us
in our childhood days up to the
threshold of manhood and then
stood aside, with a wrench at her
heart, covered up with a smile, as
she watched her boy or girl leave
home to strive for fame and for—
tune. .
It is only too often that this
fledging steps into the world,
meets with some measure of suc-
cess and lets the fond memories
of his mother fade into the back-
ground.
Mother's Day will be on us
again next Sunday and many will
take that opportunity to make a
mother happy with a visit or a
message. Many will not. Many
will do it on that day and forget
it for another year.
Your mother has suffered with
a smile for your health and com-
fort. She has suffered to bring
you into the World. The least that
you can do is to remember her
once in a while and send her a
message that will let her know
that amidst the hustle and hustle
of the husiness “‘(ll‘ld that. you
still cherish the memory of your
mother. llon't let Mother’s Day
he the only one that you remember
her on. Make every day a
Mother's Day and if you have
been forgetful start in on this
coming Mother’s Day and show
her that you still remember the
days when your mother was just
your MOTHER, with all that is
implied in that sweet name.
Popular Education
If other forms of popular edu-
cation should fail. if lihrarics and
reading rooms should close their
doors, if lecturers should cease to
orntc and eluhs give up their
classes, even it‘ colleges and
schools should suspend all but
elementary studies. yet the Amer-
ican people'should still maintain
a high degree of intelligence if
they would read good newspapers
and read them thoroughly.
The newspaper press is second
to no other force as a popular
educator, except possibly the
schools. As the schools take
people only for a short period in
youth, while the newspaper press
is communicating information
and intelligence for the life-time
of its readers, the latter may be
the greater educational force.
A constant propaganda is
maintained in behalf of good
causes, and every philanthropy
and charity and movement for
human betterment gets support
from the press.
There are many persons who
never had much of any schooling,
yet as a result of constant news-
paper reading they are broad
minded and intelligent, and their
Opinions have great value. The
newspaper is the great democratic
educator, whose courses are open
to all, and which throwa wide
open the door of opportunity to
everyone.
