Automobile Fatalities
The increasing number of auto-
mobile
assuming serious proportions in
Fairfield County. The State De-
partment of Motor Vehicles an-
nounces that the record of deaths
through auto accidents for the
month of April will reach one a
dav.
in Norwalk alone, there has
been eighteen accidents in less
than two weeks, although luckily
than two weeks, with one death
resulting.
Police departments all over the
state are issuing warnings to
drivers and the enforcement of‘the
motor vehicle laws is becoming
more stringent every day, but the
whole fault does not lay at the
door of the automobile driver.
Pedestrians are in many cases,
more at fault than the motorist.
It is no unusual sight to see peo-
ple in this city “jay walking"
along the streets, with no thought
of the motor cars that are passing
by every minute.
The number of motor cars in
use in this country is increasing
every day and with the increase
in the ears there should be an in-
crease in the care that every mo-
torist and pedestrian is supposed
to exercise.
A strict enforcement of the
laws by the court.
A drive on all infringers of the
law whether they be motorists or
pedestrians. .
A careful watch over young,
children who are allowed to play
in front of their homes.
These are a few of the things
that will cut down the alarming
loss of life and money, the result
of motor accidents in Connecticut.

A Wise Order
It has been announced that, for
the present, the various fire war-
dens in the state will issue no
permits for brush-fires. It is wise,
though to some extent the tires
will continue, being started by ac-
cident or by those who are ignor-
ant of the law or indifferent to
it. A considerable number of
persons in this state can qualify
for one or the other of the two
classes mentioned.
The danger of forest fires may
end today or tomorrow, a moder-
ate rainfall being sumcicnt, but
for the past three days it has been
real enough, for a combination of
dry weather and brisk wind com-
ing at a time before much grass
has grown and when farmers are
clearing away bushes, rubbish,
and last year‘s weed crop ' has
made the situation serious. With-
out rain the danger will increase
today and will be greater tomor-
row when many more or less ir-
responsible persons r a m b 1e
through the woodland to gather
wild flowers.
It may seem to some that fire
somewhat out in the country is a
harmless affair, but it is not, for
the state assures us that 83,000
acres were burned Over last year
and that the loss due to fires of
the sort was upwards of $500,000
without taking account of the de-
preciation of the property by the
killing of whatever growth may
have been upon it. It is no small
loss and no great recompense is
found in the thought that most of
the fires were due to carelessness.
