April 27.—-I-lis good natured willinglcss to so through the daily stunts and tasks in the saw- dust circle. changed by the absence of a trainer whom he loved and obeyed. into a morose brooding. which causrd him to become sullen and treacherous as his master's leave became .PKQ' longed. proved fatal ‘to "Mighty.” a? bull elephant of the Ringling Circus herd. Wednesday morning "Mighty" was taken from his pen at the win- ter quarters on Norman street. and executed. The execution was by hanging. or to be more explicit. "Mighty" was slowly checked to death. The killing was accomplished by placing a sling around the elephant's great neck. the hawser then being run through a series of blocks and tackles and pulled taut by the combined strength of sixty “Razorbacks" fifteen minutes elapsed between the start of the execution end death. When led from his pen to be kill- ed. the huge animsl seemed to sense that his end was near. but not once during the preparations for his execution. did he offer any resist- ance. In fact. the circus bands who acted as his cxecutioners mid he acted as one begrievlng the ion of one he loved. and to whom death was a welcome solace. Performing his tasks and obeying every command of his master. Frank Rooney with a. willingness not cher- scteristio of the other members of the herd. "Mighty" travelled the country with the circus for more than twenty years. and was respected and loved by every old timer on the lot. Shortly before the close of last season. Theme:- Rooney severed his connections with the show and a new trainer—a total stranger to "Mighty" succeeded him. At first the old elephant showed no change. Then gradually as his old master's absence begun to be felt. he became sour natured and grouchy. and later treacherous. One day. during the clodng weeks of the past season. while the show was playing in Sacramento. Cal. “Mighty" made his first bad move. While being led from the car in which he was transported from town to town be grasped the keeper who was lead- ing him by his powerful trunk. and with a quick motion toned him high and far.
