Endurance Dancmg
Extract from a newspaper description of one of the recent
endurance contests in New York city: . .
“For 14 hours the dingy hall, littered With worn slippers,
cigarette subs, newspapers and soup cans; rceking With the mingled
odors of stale coffee, tobacco smoke, cold broth, chcwmg gum and
smelling salts, was the scene of one Of the most drab anl gruelling
endurance contests ever witnessed. . . ‘
“There is nothing inspiring in seeing an extremely tired girl
in a worn bathrobc, dingy white stockings in rolls about scufflmg
felt slippers, her eyes half shut, her arms over her partner’s shoulders,
drag aching feet that seemed glued to the floor in one short, agon-
izing step after an other.
“The cold, gray dawn of her third day of continuous dancing
found Miss Sheppard, walking slowly around the room, hand in hand
with her partner. The sun sifted in, reporters and substitute danc-
ers washed up, after a fashion, outsiders stopped to glance inside,
and still the phonograph continued grinding out its slow, level jazz—
until one never wanted to hear jazz again.”
There is much to he said for the common sense of the Seattle
chief of police who announced that dancers attempting any suchi
contest in his city would be “locked up on charges of insanity.”
But how about the spectators and theatrical managers who en-
courage it?
Recognizing A Good Thing
The discovery of insulin, a pancreas extract, as a cure for dia-
betes, according to Dr. Simon Flekner of the Rockefeller Institute,
“gives promise of being one. of the great medical contributions to,
the worlc .” And thereby hangs a tale.
Insulin was found by a young doctor named 1‘. G. Banting, an
gssistant in one of thé' departments ef'li‘m‘i‘dfesl‘Ja‘hool in western
Ontario. Says Dr. Flexner: \
“No one had ever heard of him. In fact, there was no reason'
why anyone should have heard of him. This young doctor didn't
know much about diabetes. “’hy, before lecturing to his classes
on this disease (of which he did not profess to have any special
knowledge) he would have to read up on it in order to keep ahead
of his students. Quite by chance he discovered how to get insulin
and use it as a cure. At Toronto he proved the efficiency 'of his
treatment. ” “ '
Dr. Flcxncr, with the viewpoint of a great medical authority,
seems hardly just to Dr. Banting. Two things, at least, stand veryl
much to that. young man's credit. He knew a big thing when he:
saw it, and he had the enterprise to force recognition for it. SO he
accomplished more than all the doctors who knew so much .inorc
than he did about the kidneys and the pancreas. 3.
The learned specialist in any line, professional or'busincss, by'
the very fact of his knowledge, may have his eyes closed to new
discoveries. The man of less knowledge but an open and inquiring
mind always stands a chance of finding out something new and
winning a big success.
To Bo‘ost 'The Border
Prominent citizens of San Diego, 0111., are anxious to see the;
cities along the Mexican border organize for mutual prosperity. It
is not the first time such a scheme has been suggested, but it is
hoped that this time there will be the right kind of co-operation
to get the movement really under way.
The development of connecting highways, the stimulation of
commerce and business, the establishment of better systems of im-
migration from south of the border, better customs regulations and
a host of other mutual interests could be promoted. Here is what
the Douglas, Aria, “Dispatch” thinks of such a plan:
“The ideal situation would be to unite every civic organization;
on the Mexican border between El Paso and San Diego in a single-‘
minded effort to boost the border region. There should be no ques-
tion of rivalry among the towns and cities concerned, inasmuch as
