GLIDERS FOR THE ARMY . f
The army air service is taking up seriously the development; ;)
gliders, or motorlcss aircraft. Experiments both in Europefuil n
this country have convinced army officials that this type 0 pane
has distinct possibilities for usefulness either in peace.or war. In-‘
creasing civilian interest in the art, it is believed, Will provide a
source of supply when the government needs men for emergency
flying. . . _
In the course of the experiments at McCook held, one flight!
soured a distance of 150 feet. Another exceeded-300 feet, the Wind
Varying in velocity from 2 to 15 miles an hour during the tests. One
of the most interesting performances was the use of small gliders as
targets for anti-aircraft practice, the. little craft being released from
an ordinary plane and descending gradually to the ground. Very
satisfactory results were obtained in direction and control.
It is such a little time since this type of aircraft was a source
of ridicule that it is astonishing to find it so soon assuming a place
of real importance in the aerial field. The next few years should

FIGHTING THE GYPSY MOTH
Plans are being perfected for a. barrier zone along the eastern
