In translating Sir Hall Caine's
greatest novel. "The Christian," to the
screen Maurice Tourneur again has
moved his place among the great di-
rectors ot the silent drama. This
masterpiece of cinematic art. which
opened yesterday 'tor a tour days' (-n-
gagomcnt at the Rialto Theatre, is im-
pressive evidence that when the Gold-
wyn company announced it was going:
to make only tewnty pictures a year,
"but all big ones." it meant what it
said.
It was taken for granted that any
picture made by Mr. .Tourncur will be
notable for its composition, and in its
quality of showing psychological ac.-
tion on the screen. \Vhilc “The
Christian" has these attributes to a de-
gree seldom. it ever betore, equalled,
it also is replete with dramatically
stirring situation. We were told
that when the mob scene was made at
Tratalgar Square, and MY. Tourneur
directed his hundreds of extras tron:

the week in a report of a special
committee appointed ’by President
Harding’s unemployment conference
about a. year ago to make a study of
this problem-

ance of determinable facts accounts
for the disasters to many others.
"The whole problem belongs to a
vast category of issues wliicli we
must as a nation confront in the
elimination of waste it we are to
maintain and increase our high
standards or living. No waste is
greater than unemployment no suf-
fering is kcener or more fraught
with despair than that due to inabil-
ity to get jobs by those who wish to
work."
