After his brother-agents had taken their departure. Grill under direct examination told his story of the seizure and events leading up to the coup. He stated that he came to Stamford in company with one "Cap- tnln Charlie" Scanzalis, who intro— duced hi mto Mr. O'Brien. Grill represented himself to the lo~ cal man as a Springfield. Mass.. boot- logger. and said that he was in the market for some alcohol. O'Brien is said to have informed the Federal man that he could in e arrange- ments for a purchase. an a few days later is said to have introduced Grill to Michael Delohcry. Jr.. and Edward Dercgibus. Following several trips to Bridge- port nnd Danbury. Grill claimed he completed arrangements for a pur— chase of 100 barrels of alcohol. which were to be shipped from tho Fleisch- man Alcohol companys plant in l’cekakill. N. Y. Federal agents working in conjunction with Grill had in the meantime arrived in Bridgeport and were ready to make arrests and scizures. On January 8, 1922. with the liquor safely landed in the Bridgeport freight yards Grill held a. final confer- once with the alleged bootleggers in the Stratfleld hotel. A dispute is said to have arisen over the price of tho alcohol. and O'Brien. Dclohery. Kirk and Dcrcgibus were placed under ar— rest. Edward Dcrigibus, who was re- cently sentenced to‘ two years in State's prison and fitted 32.0th by the Criminal Superior court for \ioiation of the liquor law .appearcd at the trial yesterday in custody of a Special deputy from “'cthcrsfleld: This man has bee ntermed “king of the Fair- field County bootleg ring" by State's Attorney Homer S. Cummings. Frederick L. Kirk ,of Brihel. one of the defendants. was acting as Bridgeport agent for the Floischmun company at the time of his arrest. He also was in court. ' The defendants are represented by a brilliant array of legal talent who will base their pleas of dismissal on the claim that the alleged conspiracy was an entrapment conceived. solici- ted, aided and abetted by the Federal agents.
