BERLIN. March 81.—-Tha "dollar
thief," who has been robbing the
Munich postomce of thousands of
United States dollars sent. by relatives
in America to poor Germans in Ba-
varia, has been identified as a “high
postal omclal."
He is Chief Postal Inspector Piaf-
finger of the Munich postolllce. Prac-
tically every unregistered letter with
money from the United States failed
to reach its Munich deatination.’
Thousands of dollars were stolen.
Pfatllnger fixed things so he alone
could steal the money. He had two
subordinate who tried to ’play the
same game arrested and imprisoned.
The Berlin inspecting authorities,
however, discovered thirty-seven let-
ters in Pfaffinger'a desk. all contain-
ing United States money and all
marked‘ “gone astray." -
Pramnger conrmed. He sits in hisl
cell crying the whole day but has of-
fered no restitution. A deacon in his
church. he told Mends he was lucky
in speculation. He maintained a splen-
did homo and was a. leading citizen

in a suburban community where a
street was named after him.
The postal inspector is believed to
thave stolen the equivalent of at least
