Spring
The world was full yesterday of the signs of Spring. How
good it was to see the brown earth again after the long months of
snow-covered roads and fields. , _
A jolly little chipmunk ran out from under our perch and
scampcrcd gaily to the stone fence. He was fat and chubby. .Ev1-
dcntly he had lived on a. well garnished store of prowswns wisely
boarded before the winter came. A friend, who is an ardent “wet-
bob,” busied himself with an inspection of his canoe.
And signs are not lacking in the towns. Business streets-in
this city were gay with shoppers Saturday afternoon and the City
wore a decided air of having donned its Spring attire, judging from
the attractiveness of the store windows. . .
Except to a few hardy souls weather seems to play an important
part in the scheme of existence and the sunshine of the past two,
days comes as a welcome promise. of the springtime which we hope
has come to stay, and drive away the “winter of our discontent.”

The continued fighting in Ireland is saddening to all friends
of that unhappy island. The Republican army keeps up its gucrilla
warfare; ambushing and burning and destroying, seeking by every
possible device to keep the Free State government from functioning.
Its own reckless Irish courage is the bane of Ireland. It has 7,000
men now held in prison by the established government, but its moms,
hers fear neither imprisonment nor death. ,
It is a strange spectacle. 'The idealism of those Republican
fuctionists challenges admiration. They are determined to make
Ireland a republic, at whatever cost. But in their zeal they over-
look the fact that their campaign belies its own purpose. y
The first, principle of republi'canism is that the majority shall
rule. ,It is known to all the world that a big majority of the people
in Ireland are in favor of the Free State, that the Republicans con-
stitute a small minority. Yet this minority pretends to speak for
Ireland and to be Ireland. De Valera and his followers must rule-
or ruin. There is no rcpublicanism, no democracy, no freedom, in
that. Political freedom is not possible without submission to the
will of the majority.

The Missing Island
Easter Island, 2,300 miles west of Chile, in the southern Pacific,
is reported missing. It is famous for the strange statues discovered
in it a century ago—huge stone figures, standing upright in the
earth. of an unknown type of men.
There has been much speculation about those statues. 'Who
carved them,"and for what purpose? Are they hundreds of years
old, or tens of thousands? Nobody seems to know. Some have
fancied that they ar erelics of ancient Lemurla, the legendary con-
tinent supposed to have sunk from sight in the Pacific Ocean as
Atlantis did in the Atlantic. If the island is really gone, it is
unfortunate. Such remarkable vestiges of prehistoric humanity
should have been preserved. '
There is hope, however, that Easter Island ‘is still where it'
ought to be. The news dispatch from Tahiti, telling how a French
steamer failed to find it after the most painstaking quest, adds this
cheerful remark: “It is reported out by marine authorities that
observations of French merchant skippers are not always accurate.”

An article in a humorous weekly points out the fact that the
favorite sport of the year is joining the human race. Artists,
statesmen, writers, successful professional men, captains of industry,-
even social workers and little children are being praised because'
they are “so human.” No matter what dizzy heights of glory they
have attained, it is discovered in instance after instance that one
and all have something essentially “human” about them. If the
fad continues it is likely to take in even the common laborer and
the plam business man. i
It really is rather funny,
