to keep the work going and prevent deterioration of work already -
done on that big project. It is taken for granted that the work will
be completed. instead of being abandoned as some other costly enter-
prises begun in war-time have been. But the main thing ndw lsto
make some permanent disposition of that big power project so that.
the nation which has sunk about $100,000,000 in it will get correspond-
ing benefit out of it.
It mav be that turning the enterprise over to Henry Ford, or
some other: captain of industry, for private operation under conditions
protecting the. public interest, is the best way. It does seem, though,
rather humiliating that the government of so great and cfiicxcnt
a country as this cannot handle that project profitably. Must fail-
ure in such a case necessarily be taken for granted 1 The govern-
ment-opcratcd Panama Canal seems to be doing very well.

The Forest Road Movie
A recent Department of Agriculture motion picture release is a
one-reel film entitled “Building Forest Roads.” The film shows the
men, methods and machinery used by the Forest Service in construct-_
ing its fine roads through western national forests.
There are the engineers who map out the route through great
forests and over mountain sides. There are the men of the clearing
crew who cut a right of way through the timber, and the dynamiters
who blast away great sections of the mountain side. Graders, bridge
constructors and surfacers all perform their respective labors in or-
der to make a road suitably graded, soundly constructed, smoothly
surfaced to serve the people whom business and pleasure bring to the
parks. K’ .
The film shows, too, the reasons for providing such fine roads
through the wilderness. It depicts the mineral deposits only waiting
for the machinery to develop their wealth, the mature timber ready
to be cut and hauled, the scenic treasures which would be denied toi
most persons it it were not for the road, and the menacing forest fire '
which can be better fought with the aid of the forest highway. '
As the phonograph has taken good music into more American
homes than ever knew it ,in the past and has therefore stimulated
attendance at well given opera and concerts, so scenic films of this
sort bring the lure of the great outdoors to the movie audience and
stimulate patriotism and travel hunger in many stay-at-homc souls.

. .It sometimes seems to be the especial province of a newspaper to
criticise; it is therefore doubly pleasant to give praise where praise
lS due. A trolley car was making its way out of Stamford en route
to Norwalk. Au intoxicated man boarded it, staggered stupidly to
a seat where it looked as though he was going to sleep. So far, so
good. Even drunken men have to be transported. Soon, however,
the effects of the excessive potations indulged in manifested them-
selves in obscene jests and comment addressed to the car in general
in the vague manner of the man whose Wits have been driven out
of his head by the poison he has poured in his mouth.

the actions of the motorman and conductor of the car. Because
there were women on the car the conductor politely, but firmly,
