good of the community. Let us hope
that such a. feeling as this continues
to grow in the Norwalks—there is
need of it.
The people of such communities
manifest this warmth of civic senti-
ment at every turn. If they are away
on their travels, and the name of their,
home city is mentioned. they give
glowing descriptions of its advantages
and fine spirit. They make it appear
cxtrcmely attractive as a place to live
or do business in.
People are impressed by this loyal
devotion. Those who may he contcmo
plating some change of residence get
the idca. that such a place would be a
mighty good one to choose.
The sentiment. which such people
manifest for their home communities‘
has been the force which creates a
certain distinctive reputation for a
community. and it becomes widely
known as a place of special. advan..
taxes and line community life. After
a. city has thus acquired it. name for
itself, its fame tends to spread and
enlarge and the place seems to grow
without much effort. It draws people
that apprcciute the spirit of progress
~the kind of "permanent visitors" we
need here in Norwalk.
Thus the mental attitude the
people of a place has much to do with
the question whether it will advance
or not. If they are disposed to carp
and criticise at every slight detect, a.
pull of discouragement is thrown over
it. If they dwell on its achievrrncnts
and advantages and show that they
consider themselves fortunate to live
in such a hopeful and promising com-
munity. it can hardly help gown-lg.
