' Indications are that influenza. and pneumonia. are becoming widespread in Connecticut. Dr. Stanley H. Os- born, commissioner or the state de- partment of health, said yesterday. The diseases have been increasing, steadily in prevalence since Decem- ber. The number of influenza cases reported to the department last Week was 120. while sixty-seven new cases of lobar pneumonia were brought to light. More cases of pneumonia have been reported each week during this win- ter than the previous two winters. "It has long been known that the greatest number of deaths from pneu- monia occur during the late winter and early spring." says a statement issued by the department with its weekly summary of communicable diseases. “The pneumonia problem alone deserves considerable atten- tion." There were 1655 cases of lobar pneumonia. in the state in 1922, with 769 deaths, :rd 5.941 cases of influ- enza. with 515 deaths. “The present type of influenza." the report says. “fortunately. is mild, but there is no doubt. about the ex- istence of the disease. Hartford County appears to be the center of the diphtheria out- break. with twenty-two cases. , New Haven County has the majority of scarlet fever cases. Measles cases to~ tolled 485 for the week, as against 493. This disease is spread over the entire state. Whooping cough cases totalled eighty-nine. There were eighty-six new cases a. week ago.
