Peter Rabbit felt so safe in the
dear Old Friar Patch that. when he
was there the thought of da r ltd-
ly ever entered his head. e bull
brisrs and brambles made such a
tangled mass there that is was pos-
sible to move about only along the
rivatc little paths that Peter and
Rita. Peter had .cut through thorn.
These little paths were just big
enough for Peter and Mrs. Peter to
move along in easily. No one bigger
than they could get through them.
'They had cut. these little tbs in
all directions throu h the ear Old
Briar Patch. and are they could
laugh at Roddy Fox and Granny Fox
and Old Man Coyote and Booty the
Owl and Terror the Goshawk.
There were just two enemies who
were to be feared there. They were
cousins. One was Billy Mink and
the other was Shadow the Weasel.
Billy Mink was not much to be Scared
because Billy was hardl likely to
some way over there. Wbl e be roams
about. a great deal he prefers to be
near water. or where there is plenty
of cover under which to hide. a
doesn’t often make long trips in the
open. as he would have to do to cross
the Green )laadows in winter.
But ”Shadow the Weasel is likely
to appear at any time where he ll
least expected. And Peter never
forgot
that sooner or later Shadow
was likely to pay the dear Old Brist-
Pateh a visit. So he and little Mrs.
Peter had carefully planned what
they would do if ever Shadow should
appear there. é
It happened that. one day shortly
after Old Jed Than r had gone
back to the Old more Peter
chanccd to be sitting on the very
edge of the 01d Brier Patch looking
over toward the Green Forest. He
wasn’t looking for anybody or any.

turned and as fast as his legs could
take him he hurried into the dear
Old Bria!- Patch to find little Hrs.
Peter.
“He's coming, Fuzzy. he's coming!"
cried Peter as soon as he found her.
And on his face was such a look of,
fright that Mrs. Peter knew at once
he had dreadful news. .
“Who is coming?" she whispered
as if afraid to aloud.
"Shadow the snail” crie‘ Peter.
“He's coming straight for the Old
Ins-la: Patch There isn’t a minute to
ose. ‘
Peter began to run about in the
'Old Bria:- Patch as if he didn't know
what: he was doing. This way and
that. way he ran. back and forth
along those little paths. with little

bits acted as if the were crazy with

was doing._ He was mixing up his
trail. At: last when he dared wait
