"We started up to investigate a re—
port taht a negro was running a
gambling house in which white per-
sons were permitted to gamble with
negroes."

Bringing his narrative to the hold-
ing up of the three men, Dado con-
tinned:
"Neelis. Daniel and Andrews had
stopped thei'r auto up the road and
wrre sitting in the car. Some of the
men approached and asked them who

"No, there was no violence. but
their guns were taken away from
them.

Robert L. Dade. mayor of Mer
Rouge. told the investigators that
"before the klan came. people in Mer
Rouge were like brothers. but now
there is a strained feeling. Under
the regime of the klan, there has
arisen a condition in this parish that
is intolerable.”
The. condition which existed prior
to reform measures enforced by Dr.
B. M. Mo Koin as mayor, was consid-
ered as peaceful by the present may-
or, Mr. Dado.
Raids, according to testimony. were
rrade on Mer Rouge by masked men
wearing Ku Klux Klan regaila. Ciiti-
sons were flogged. some ordered de-
en lectures. '
Then came an alleged attempt to
kill Dr. McKoin as he was enroute
through the country in answer to
what later was declared to have been
a false call to attend a sick woman.
Many citizens of Mer Rouge, accord-
ing to its present mayor. do not be-
lieve any attempt was made to as-
sassinate the physician, while citizens
of Bustrop firmly believe such an at-
tempt was carried out.
Later-Richard. Watt Daniel. W. C.
Andrews and \Vatt's father. J. L. Dan-
iel. were seized by hooded men on a
crowded highway. taken into the
woods and flogged. “Toot" Daven-
port. also seized. was not molested.
Davenport. Andrews and J. L. Dan-
iel. were released, but. Watt Daniel
and Richard were carted off and tor-
tured to death.
The motive {or the double murder
has not been brought out. The state
has summoned more than a scdrc of
witnesses to testify oday.
