the studio folk. if you remember the
story Harry Leon Wilson wrote about
him. They laughed at him because
he was so serious. so sincere.

How like Merton this Hunter youth
really. is! Several times I, nipped a
smile belch-o it blossomed into a laugh.
he was so serious.
"Do you knotv what is the matter
with the theaters today. Mr. Dean?
It's the audiences." he answered his
own question. “They see so many
fine plays. so many fine pictures and
hear such fine music that they can‘t
fully appreciate it. The people have
grown biase. They do not realize. that
in Amer-ice. they are givin the best of
everything in the theater."
That's where he broke in with his
remarks about the cruelty of laughter.
"People laugh out loud at the most
pathetic moments of a play. People
in the front rows break of! an actor's
line with s. laugh so that those in the
balcony who really go to the theater

since he was 12. He went to New
York when he was 17. sleeping in
railroad stations end on park benches.
