dith of the state Board of Education‘

and supervising agents. urging them
to co-operste in making "American
education week" a. success. _ This

Commissioner Meredith points out
that the number of individuals over
ten years of age who are unable to
lwrite in any Ian increased in
this State from 53.685 in 1910 to 67.-
265 in 1920.
“There are approximately twice as

speak English.” says the letter. Such
individuals are beyond the reach or
the day schools.
“Upon school committees rests the
