This year railroads were responsible
for 181 forest fires in Connecticut, ac- »
cording to the statement. Excepting
nine. which were set by the Central
Vermont Railroad. all were due to
burning ties at a time when this
should not be allowed. inv-the judg-
ment 0! the State forester. A few
were probably due to the firemen
throwing hot clinker: from the en-r
gines, but most of them. his statement
says, were due to detective locomo-
tives.
“The great damage dope by fires
this spring has aroused the public
and especially the land owners ,to the
seriousness of this problem." accord-
ing to the statement. "There were
fourteen tremendous conflag'rations
which burned over 1,000 acres each.
Altogether thirty—five serious
burned half of the area covered dur—
ing the season and accounted for
somewhat more than half the dam-
age.” _ -
