Roddy Fox Hears an Unexpected Sound
Be wise and turn a deafened ear
To sounds ’twere better not to hear.

Reddy Fox was down on the
Green Meadows, catching grasshop—
fiers. With him were two of his
alf~grown children, the other two
being on «with Mrs. Redd-y. It Was

see, now that he had children to look
out tor, Roddy was careful not to
get into trouble. Besides, food was
plentiful. Just. mow it was grasshop-
per time and there was no excuse for

got all about grasshoppers as he lift—
ed his head to listen. Slowly a grin
crept over his crafty face.
“Quack, quack, quack, quack," was
what Roddy heard. It. was faint but.
.clear. It was a long, long time since
Raddy had heard that. sound.
“Ducks!" exclaimed Roddy under
his breath. “Ducks! Farmer Brown 3
Boy has Ducks this year! He has
Ducks, and I didn’t know it until
now."
But aloud Roddy said nothing at.

doing exactly what he was doing,
listening to that strange sound which

though in his heart he thought it was
the belt sound he had heard for a
long, long time. "No. it isn't: good
sound t least it isn' t; a good sound
for little lose: to listen to. When—
ever you hear that sound he sure to
keep away from the place where it
comes from. Don't listen to it! Now
lot are nee. how smart. you are at
catching mnboppera."

watered. You see, Redtly is very, '
very fond of Ducks and it was a long
time since he had tasted one. He

lhadn’t. He was lad to know that

knew that until those young Foxes
were big enough to care for them-
selves he should keep out of danger

tuning for the sound of those Ducks
that. he didn' t attend to business. .
“I wonder if those. Ducks are kept
in the hcnyard or if they are out 111
the barnyard," thought Roddy. “Of
course, it. doesn’t make any dlrference
because I am going to keelp away
from there. Just: the same, wishI
know. My. my, how good a fat Duck
would taste!
