The aurora bureulls (or northern
lights) is occasionally soon, in the
north teiiipei-ate zone and frequently
in the polar regions. It is said to be
due to the pussuge of electricity
through the rarefied air of the arctic
zone. The name “aurora boreiilis"
was first used by Cnssendi. who, in
1621, observed one in France, and
wrote a deseriptiun of it. The “Inu-
rora'f is periodic in its manifestations,
the finest displays being at intervals
of 00 years, and less marked ones at
intervals of 10 or 11 years. It ls
also asserted that these greater and
lesser display. correspond with the
increase and decrease of spots on the
sun. The phenomenon is generally
manifested in the following way: A
dim light-appears on the horizon
shortly after twilight, and gradually
assumes the shape of an arch. having
11 pale yellow color, with its concave
side turned earthwurd. From till-
arch streams of light shoot forth,
passing from yellow to green and then
to brilliant violet. The mime aurora
