HARTFORD. June 16.-—Commis—
sioner of Motor Vehicles Robbins B.
Stoeckel has asked the police through—
out the State to watch for automobiles
whose number plates are partially hid-
den from view by bumpers or other
equipment. or whose numbers are ob-
scured by mud. The following is a
copy of his letter to the chiefs of po-
lice: »
"Section 12. sub-section c. Chapter
400 or the Motor Vehicle law provides
displayed
upon motor vehicles shall be entirely
unobscured and the: numerals and let-
ters thereon shah be plainly legible at
no portion of the equiphtent of any
car such as a bumper. tire hoider or
strap. may be so placed on the car as
to interfere with a clear View of the
number plate.
"There arei’how being ustalied by
certain manufacturing firms :1 type of
bumper which. when applied without
change of position of number plate,
does as a matter of fact partially or
wholly hide the number. Also, there
are many cases ,0! tire holders and
spare tires being so placed that the
numbers cannot be readily seen. All
of the police forces throughout the
