the most exciting general election
held in the Pliillippine Islands since

An-(rimn sovereighty. took place to-
ady throughout the archipelago. The
.rincipal contests centered in control l
of the next legislature, although
governors. treasurers and other offl-
flfls of but all four of the forty-nine
provinces were Chosen. In four pr -
rinses. inhabited by the non-Chri
rm trihes. the omcials are appointed

Since the establishment of the
Danae of representatives in 1907, the
Hacionalista party has controlled that
body by a large majority. That party
also has controlled the senate. with
Virtually no opposition, since the up-
per house came into being six years
ago.
Early this year a revolt
party ranks occurred over the ques-
tion of the method of leadership. One
faction under the leadership of Ser-
gio Osmena who has been speaker of
the house since its organization, con-
tended for unipersonal leadership in
the party. The other faction. headed _
by Manuel L. Quezon, president of
toe senate, advocated collective
leadership or leadership by a com-
mittee of five or more persons. ~
After many weeks spent in futile
attempts to compromise their differ:
ences and after Speaker Osmena and
Senate- President Quezon announced
their intention to retire from public

resulting in the formation of the Na-
cicnallsta Collectivista party. Sena-

initiation to quit public life and an-
nounced he would lead the new Col-
leétnista party and become a candi-
date for the senate again in his hold
district, composed of the provinces
or Taysbes, Cavite, Bataan: and
Mindoro. .
Speaker Osmena also decided to
icontinue in public life as head of the
Nacionalista party. but instead of
seeking reelection as member of the
house he became a. candidate tor the
senate in his home province, Cebu.
Bcth Mr. Quezon and Mr. Osmena
visited many provinces during the
campaign and orators were on the
stump in virtually every municipali-
ty and barrio (village) in the is-
lands.
‘ The Democrats. party which 'has
four representatives in the last legis-
iature out of a total 114, nominated
candidates in a numtier okprovinces.
Members of that party claimed that
their representation in the next legis-
lature would be largely increased as
:a rcsult of the election.
