a natural sequence to heavy construc-
tion expenditures. actual and pro-
spective In 1921 gross new congtruc-

ertheless failed to place the company
abreast of the demand 'for telephone
service. For 1922 an expenditure ex-
ceeding- $20,000.000 is planned which
is as large a program as the company
can hope to carry to a successful con-
clusion.
At the beginning of the present year
the New England Telephone & Tele-
graph Co. owed the American Tele-
phone & Telegraph Co. 813.750.000.
