There was no change in the charac-
ter of market. opinions li‘eard in the
Wall Street District after the close
yesterday, important interests contin—
uing extremely bullish on leading
stocks and predicting advances in U. S.
Steel. Studebaker and. Baldwin dur-
ing the remainder of the week, and
them were many who thought thin it
will not be long before U. 8. Steel sells
above. 100. Railroad Issues also came
in for a. good deal or bullish favor es-
pecially issues like St. Paul Pfd., Bal-
timore & Ohio and Rock Island and
there was a good deal of conjecture as
to which of these stocks will go first
on the dividend paying list. ’
There was a certain element on the
street that is disposed to take a posi-
tion on the short side of the market
again because of statements mde in
regard to past earnings of some or the
lending corporations'snd it should oc-
eassions no‘ surprise if this element
should today or withing few days 39-
lect some of the recently strong stocks
as targets for attack.
The short interest in the active
stocks however is so large ns’to fur-
nish n hasis of support and resistance
to any attacks that might be made.
The statement of earnings for the
' first quarter of this year to he issued
shortly by the ,l‘. S. Steel Corp“ it. is
understood will show substantial im~
provement in the earning power 01' the
corporation and that the earnings for
March will contrast harply with those
of last December.
The first hours trading was the larg-
est that has been noted in any like
period at any time since the upward
movement started. the sales being in
excess of 450.000 shores. lfnited States
Steel indicated the general market

new high for the movement and then
reacted to 973g. but at thatlevel was
in demand again. Studebaker was di—
rectly influenced by the report or pub-

logical Survey reports a final spurt of
activity in anticipation of the strike
carried production of soft coal up to
11,437,000 tons in the week ended
March 25. Output was the largest
recorded since December 1920, and
exceeded by nearly 400,000 tons the
lesser peak reached last October when
consumers anticipated a DOSSible rail—-
road strike. Production was far short
of what the mines can produce and
the railroads transport. for in the last
week before the great coal strike of
1919. a. total of 13,140,000 tons was
