The Football Investigation
Thc bitter rivalry bctwccn two country towns. which hocnmc so ncutc
that about $100,000 was hot on a football game. was the cause of the foot-
ball scandal which resulted in the disqualification of nine University of II«
linois athletes and ten Notre Dame gridiron stars. A group of citizens of
Cnrlinvlllc. Illinois dccldcd last fall to financially clean up the rival town of
'l‘qylorviile. by obtaining the services at ten college stars and betting the
limit on the result. 'l‘aylorx'ille heard of the plan and secured nine college
stars for its own team and beat Carlinvillc in addition. to winning 850.000.
thus boating the rival town at its own game. The prompt action of thc
authorities of both universities are being complimented on all sides as the
disqualification of all the athletcs who had taken part in the game was thc
only fair thing to do in justice to amateur sports. The players went into
the game knowing that. they Wcrc deliberately breaking one of tlic foremost
rules in college athletics. 1n taking money for tin-tr services they hnvc loal
something that cannot be won back. This exposure will no doubt be u lcn-
son to many othcr coilcgt- athletcs who might be tcmptcd lo "ht-Ip out a pro.
