If the. average lifetime is assumed
to be forty years, it appears that
among any million living persons
there will be 213 1-2 times 40. or 8,540
persons among the million who have
had smallpox. Thus. there is. at the
most for the United States. but one
chance in 116 that any particular per-
son Will have smallpox ‘Once during
his lifetime. and his chances at having
it twice is one in 18.456. Let us have
still more light on this important sub-
