The new system adopted this year
in our local schools of crowding the
usual year‘s work into a much shorter
period of time and thus requiring the
pupil. to do a large amount of daily
study at home after school hours. is

take.
Referring to a school report print-
ed in your paper on January 5th, the
statement was made that while un-
WIY my! tasks have beamput to
:the children. they have shown a far
greater mpacity for doing school work
than they usually supposed to poses
and that the children themselves are
well plowed with the results of their
hard work.
These statements are no doubt true.
. but do we murder the price which
the children are paying for this over-
work? It means the secrifice of
much out door recreation. the nervous
strain on both children and parents
in the home occasioned by the con-
tniuol hurrying Ind pushing the child-
ren in order that they may accom-
plish the large amount of homework
required or them and the late hours
new to do this.
It ”routs desire to have their
children the up some accomplishment
such as instrumental music. this must
be done at a serious risk to the child's
health by reason of already over-
crowded time or dropped altogther.
The world of today is strenuous en-
ough for grown-ups. Why should
we rob our children of their child-
hood? That is the time in their liv-
es which rightfully belongs to them-
tor plenty ol.’ bodily exercise in the
open air and goOd‘whoiesome fun just
so for as it does not interfere with a ‘
normal mental development.
It would be interesting to hear how
other. Nor-walk parents feel about this
‘ matter.
