BANK TAX INCREASES
State to Receive Over $70,000 Mfore
This Year.
The state this year will get an in-
crease'of more than $70,000 on the
tax on saving deposits in banks. ac-
cording to figures made public yester-
day by Tax Commissioner-William H.
Blodgett. The total tax which will be
paid this year is 8945, 359. 62 as
against $873, 565. 93 last year. Halt
' of the tax was due Thursday and the
' rest is due and payable July 20. The
tax is paid on deposits in savings
banks. saving departments of trust
companies and of national banks.
A feature of this year's activity is
that the tax on savings deposits in
national banks is about doubled. This
is due to the apportionment o securi-
ties among the departments kthese
banks in ratio to the deposits. ither-
to. according to the tax commission-
er's department, tax exempt securities
for the cntire establishment were
credited to the savings department.
The total savings deposits for tax-
ation purposes in all banks in the
state as reported on January 1 by
su'ing‘s banks and trust companies
were as following: Savings Banks.

announced in April that he had dis-
co3ered a method of making alcohol
by means of which four “Times as
much alcohol can be Obtained from
the same amount of raw materials as

five cents a gallon. His claim is that
by his new method four gallons of
alcohol is obtained from each hun
drcd pounds of vegetable matter con-
taining starch sugar and callulose.
