Shot through the heart in a pistol duel with P3—
trolman Jeremiah Dorney and Edward Clune,
Frederick Grille, aged twenty-two year“, of 21
\\'ard street, Nev. Haven. died almost instantly,
at 1:30 o'clock this mo 'ning, following his attempt
to escape from the police, after he had been sur-
prised in the act of robbing Alley Hassan 5 fruit
and grocery store, at the corner of Orchard street;

Thomas LaConte, aged of “East .103rd
street. New York City,” .irillo’s companion in the
robbery. and the "lookout,” is in the .Norwalk
Hospital with a bullet wound in his left Side, about
three inches below the heart. He was shot while
running from Patrolman Thomas Dorney. Grillo
was shot by thetvro ofiicers after he had engaged
in a running pistol duel with them at a distance of
fifteen feet. across the. vacant lot; that lies on West
avenue, between (.lrchard and Merwin streets.
A third man. George Muldello. alias Georgie
Gordon, aged :29. of the Plaza Hotel, Stamford,
was apprehended in that city about 3 o'clock this
morning; by Patrolmen McCarthy and Hanrahan,
who entered Muldello's room with a pass key, and
overpowered him. before he, when he awoke,
could grasp a fully loaded .38 calibre automatic
revolver, which was on a table at his bedside.
The three men. according to the police of this
and other cities, are members of a gang of eight
01' ten men. who have “hangouts” in Stamford,
Bridgeport and New Haven, and who have been
operating in those cities, as well as in this city, for
the past six months, and who were instrumental
in robbing the Boston Store. Morgan’s Hardware
Store and Webb Brothers’ Tire Repair Shop, dur-
ing the past month.
Muldello, who is in the Stamford lockup, is to be
brought to this city this afternoon to attend the
inquest being. held here into the death of Griilo,
by Coroner John J. Phelan. An autopsy, it is be-
lieved, will be performed on Grillo, by Medical Ex-
aminer Samuel H. Huntington, previous to the
arrival of the coroner at 1:45.“ ,
A resident near the Hassan store telephoned to
the police, at 12:40 o’clock, that two men were act-
ing in a suspicious manner near the Hassan store.
Patrolmen Clune and Murphy went to investigate
but could find nothing. They returned to the
Water street police station and reported, when a
few minutes lat anoth er ,call came in from the
same person that; e men were in the store. '
This time Patrblmen Clune and Jeremiah Dor-
ney changed from their uniform into plain clothes
and walked down West avenue, while Patrolman
Thomas Dorney got into an automobile and drove
aroundHarbor avenue and up Orchard street,
With the lights on the car extinguis‘ bed.
He left the automobile dovvn Orchard street and
was walking towards the store, when IaConte,
who was acting as “lookout” for Grille, noticed
him and ran. Dorney called to him to stop, but
LaConte kept on running across the vacant lot.
Calling “Halt” again, Dorney drew his revolver
and fired at the fleeing man, who dropped in his
tracks. The bullet had penetrated the man’s back
