The Commercial Records says “Just as in the past prices
on various commodities soared to heights that were 1111-
warranted and insupportable, so now we are in danger of going
too far in the other directionv with prices falling to levels that
underestimate the demand. ‘Vhat business needs most at the
present time is stabilization. Early drops in prices failed to
stimulate buying, as buyers felt that the movement had only
just started, and would go much further. The danger now is
that buying will start so suddenly and in suchJolume that
existing stocks of goods will be quickly exhausted and prices
will as suddenly rise again.” - »
Present Conditions in the Lumber
Business
The cost of production is as high as last year; the value of
standing timber is steadily increasing and the present tendency
of lagging: and manufacturing costs indicate increased rather
than reduced costs. Many mills have reduced the volumn of
their production owing to the excessive costs as compared to
the present market values and a large number of mills have
ceased operations entirely. Most lumber stocks are already be-
low normal and a further reduction is certain. The percentage
of high grade lumber produced has been materially decreased.
Give these conditions your careful consideration. Be not de’
ccived. Our policy has been and will be permanent, not to hold
up prices because we have stock on hand bought at a higher
price, but to offer at all times upon the replacement cost.
