that George Stivera and Marcus Baa.
sett. who escaped from Sing'~8ing
Prison last Saturday, are uding near
.\ew Fair'field, Conn, was expressed
today by Warden Lewes on his return
here after an all night chase. He al-
so expressed the opinion that, instead
of heading for the Canadian North-
west, as reported yesterday. they had
"lost their nerve" after their bold
break for lil'erty' and had taken'cover.

The warden reported that. on re—
ceiving word that the .convicts were
ill Central Connecticut. 200 Hartford
police reserves had turned out at
midnight with riot guns and were
guarding all roads to Boston. less the
pair should attempt to push through
to that city. _ .

Sing and New York Police Headquar-
ters yesterday that George Silvers
and Marcus Bassett. two convicts who
escaped Saturday night from the
state prison, had spent Tuesday night
in a patch of woods five miles north
of Danbury. Conn. ‘Although New
York and Connecticut detectives. re-
inforced by armed guards from W'inz-
dale. hurried to the spot the men
were not captured. '

Early in the afternoon Police Cap~
tain Daniel W’_ Bradley. of Danbury.
notified W’arden Iawes at Sing Sing
and oflicials of nearby cities thaé the
two men had just whizzed through

up to July 15 and their cases disposed

bered 163.738, it was announced yea-
terday at the War Department.-

The total number of draft deser-
tions which had been reported to the

ords showed that 161.354 men classed
