parade. ,By the Norwalk library. a
large body of young girls awaited the»
parade, and cheered as“ passed by.

Therein the shade of the great
maples, Memorial Day services were
held. They opened with the Star
Spangled Banner, sung by John W.
Wchle. Brigadier General Russell
Frost. made a short address, 'and Mr.
Wehle sang "Theres a Long, Long
Trail A-Wlndlng." Each number was
applauded. The Rev. Captain Swan,
who had served for eleven .months in
France as chaplain, spoke. He » said
that the true spirit of Americanlsm
was exempllfled by the soldiers who
sang “I don't know what the war’s
about," but went over because they
were told to. And he remarked that
the reason so few of the (ax—soldiers
took part .In the parade was because
they felt shy about appearing in their
uniforms. The services closed with
that beautiful Memorial Day song,
"Tentlng Tonight," sung by Mr.
“’chle. ' '
Then the 'llne of march was re-
sumed, back to the armory, where
coffee'and sandwlches and ice cream
were serve¢ Also where a Boy Scout
guard had to be placed at the door to
keep a few thousand children from-
swamlng all over the floor. The band
played. and a few couples. soldiers
and the pretty girls who served the
refreshments, started dancing. but
when the band saw the “chow” the
music came to an abrupt hall. and all
enjoyed ‘1he spread. ,_
The serving of the refreshments
proved to be a somewhat unusual font.
It was carried out under] the direction
of the Ladies' Auxiliary of W'llllam
McKlnlcy Camp, ably assisted by
Charles B..Mllnc, Charles F. Guar~
nieri and Harry J. Keene, who served
