Five thousand dollars is the sum
this year provided for the equipment
and supplies for live thousand people
—one dollar per pupil.
This sum must provide first for the
replenishment of worn-out text books.
Twenty-live thousand books are incon-
stant use. About one-fifth of these
wear out yearly. They cost. on an
average. seventy cents apiece. How
adequate this sum is, for the purpose,
can be judged from the fact that the
children are now using tattered vol-
umes—many of them with pages miss-
tions because‘evan these poor speci-
mens are so scarce.
Besides replacing books, this same
five thousand dollars must buy, for five
[thousand pupils, a year's supply of
pens, ink, pencils. paper, erasers, pen-
