A shortage, unofficially estimated to be about $25,000, has been
reported in the accounts of Wilfred Bodwell, for fifteen years cash-
ier of the City National Bank, and treasurer of the City of Nomlk.
Ohicers 'of the bank, in a statement issued this morning, do-
clared that the bank and depositors are amply protected by a surety
company bond and will not lose anything.
Mr. Bodwell is now at Dr. Givens’ Sanatorium, Stamford, re-
ceiving treatment for a nervous breakdown. -
He is said to have juggled figures between accounts at the
bank and those of the city. One instance brought to the attention of
city omcials is alleged to show that, upon receiving a. check for
$00,000:!” city taxes he credited the City of Norwalk With but .
$50,000 of that amount, giving credit to the bank for $10,000 of the

Mr Bodwell has not been in goodliealth in any respect for over
a year, and his serious condition at present is by no means a sur-
prise to his friends. He is well-connected in Norwalk socially and
fraternally, and has many friends who hope that the numerous
rumors as to his financial condition are not entirely true, and that he
will recover speedily. _ . .
Cashier Bodwell has been connected with the City National
Bank for over thirty yers, and has always held the confidence and
respect of the ofiicers of that institution.
No official examination has been made as yet of his books. but
