Experiments in French plants haVe

cellent cement as a hy-product of
beet sugar refining. The first step in
the production of sugar from beets is
boiling them.
It has heretofore been customary to
throw away as valueless the scum
formed on the caldrons. But it has
now been discovered that this scum
icontains large quantities of carbon-
ate of lime.
it is estimated that 4,000
,the carbonate can be recovered from
' 70,000 tons of heels. To this quantity
of the carbonate 1,100 tons of clay are
