Why this condition, no general, so unfortunate? '
Put all the contributory reasons together and you have this basic. inexcusa
able fact: Their incomes are progressively exceeded by their expenses. ' ,_

' The Connecticut Company is no exception. It is “up against it.” because,
in spite of the most carefu exerciscof economics, its expenses are progressively
exceeding its income.
Returns of 388 street railways in the United States, comprising 63% of the
'entlre electric railway mileage of the country, for the six months ending
’June 30, 1918, showed a net decrease of 82.16% in their earnings as compared
to the some six months in 1917. .Wllcre their net income for those six months in
1917 had been $15,546,397, their income for the same period this year was rc‘
duccd to $2,733,000.
