The Red Cross will not be demobilized HE ending of the war will, of course, reduce its personnel, but its organi- zation, now even more efficient than ever, will concentrate upon peace-time service. Nearly one hundred great disasters have called upon the Red Cross in recent years and found it ready. The help has been quickly given. It has been skilfully administered. It has shown no discrim- ination of race or creed. It has brought medical, surgical and nursing help to sick and wounded. It has provided quick provision for the destitute. It has arranged pensions for widows left by disaster without support, and schooling for their children. It has sent its officers to identify bodies at distant points-when the victim’s rel- atives were too poor to go themselves. It has even arranged for the restora- tion of houses to their original sites from which flood had swept them and for the purchase of supplies through merchants in devastated towns in order that the town’s business might suffer as little set—back ' as possible. The only way in which the Red Cross can meet the quick emergencies“ of fire, . flood,cyc lone, shipwreck, epidemic, explo- sion, earthquake and famine, is by hav~ ing the whole American public behind it. Commencing next Monday the Amer- ican peOple will join the Red Cross. They will show what they think of the Red Cross -——what their gratitude is for what it has done in war and in peace— what their confidence is in the Red Cross for the future. This will be a campaign for mem- bers, not money, and one dollar pays for full membership. The man, woman or child who joins the Red Cross and pays one dollar is as much a member in full as anyone right be who paid a million dollars. Furthermore, you join once, and once only. The aim for Manhattan is every man, woman and child enrolled for 1919. Of course, such an aim cannot literally be realized—there are the hopelessly poor, the insane, the criminal—but every man, woman and child not included in those classifications is confidently expected to put down his or her name —once, and once only—and wear the 1919 button of the organization before which the world stands in thrilled and loving admiration.
